The class is an intermediate design between the Excelsior and Galaxy classes. The Ambassador-class has been in active in Starfleet since the early to mid 24th century. They were designed to be the perfect diplomatic ship, hence the name of the class. They may have been a replacement of the retired Constitution-class. The mission objectives of the Ambassador-class include diplomatic, science and defensive duties. The class is still on active duty, though there have not been any new commissioned vessels and are out of construction. The Ambassador is now among the aging ship designs.
