Summary:
The Centaur Class is an Excelsior and Miranda Class variant built at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in the late 24th century. The class design came into use during the Dominion War. They have an Excelsior saucer and warp nacelles without an engineering hull. It has a weapons pod similar to the Miranda at the bottom of the saucer between the warp engines.
Constructed from salvaged components, components in work, and custom assemblies fabricated by the individual fleet yards. Those vessels not destroyed or damaged beyound salvageability were returned to Starfleet bases and yards for rework back to their respective major classes or repaired and returned to service.
The name "Centaur" is not the official name of this design, instead it is listed as an Excelsior-class variant. The name is taken from the only known ship of this design. And so despite what some sites say, that the Centaur-class has been around since the 2330's, is false. The class design is very recent.
