Summary:
Federation starship of the late 24th century. These ships began construction in 2365 at the Antares Fleet Yards at Antares IV and Utopia Planitia at Mars. The Akira class is a relatively large type of starship with heavy armament. The class follows the current design of single hulled starships. The warp nacelles are attached to two catamaran-like secondary hulls which are connected to the top of the saucer section. A weapons module is located at the top of the secondary hulls. There are two shuttlebays, located at the front of the ship with three doors, and one in the back with three doors. The Akira are proven battleships of the Federation, but they also can serve in other roles. The weapons pod can be replaced for a sensor pod or other science applications depending on what is needed for its mission. However the war with the Dominion has required ships of this class to be used as defensive vessels.
